Search any China-sourcing forum and you will see the same advice: “Buy from 1688,” “Find it in Yiwu,” “Use Taobao for samples,” or “Ask a Pinduoduo agent.” Each answer has some truth in it. But none is a complete sourcing strategy.
These routes were built for different jobs. A platform helps you discover and transact with sellers. A Yiwu sourcing agent helps manage the work that happens between a product idea and an export-ready shipment: comparison, communication, supplier checks, samples, specifications, quality, consolidation and delivery coordination.
For a brand, retailer, importer or e-commerce seller outside China, the decision should be based on the order you are trying to build—not on a headline price alone.
The short answer
The strongest programmes often use more than one route. An agent may compare a Yiwu market offer against a 1688 factory quotation, source a retail sample from Taobao, and then manage the winning supplier through production and shipment.
1. Yiwu sourcing agents: physical discovery plus local control
Yiwu is especially useful when you need breadth: gifts, seasonal goods, home products, pet items, kitchenware, accessories, stationery and other consumer-product categories. The official Yiwugo buyer service describes its platform as the official online extension of Yiwu International Trade Mart and lists tens of thousands of market shops. That density is valuable when you need to compare multiple items, suppliers and price points quickly.
But visiting a market—or searching its online listings—is only the first layer. A qualified sourcing agent can turn this discovery work into an operating process: explain the real price and MOQ basis, compare alternatives, check the supplier and sample, align packaging and specifications, follow production, inspect goods, receive mixed orders and coordinate export delivery.
Use a Yiwu agent when: your order spans several product categories or suppliers; you need a team on the ground; or you want one controlled path from product search to consolidation.
Watch for: an agent should be transparent about how it is paid, who the supplier is where disclosure is appropriate, what inspection covers, and which costs are product, service, storage and freight. “One-stop” should not mean invisible.
2. 1688 sourcing agents: domestic wholesale access, with a verification layer
Alibaba Group describes 1688.com as a leading integrated domestic wholesale marketplace. In practice, it is a powerful place to research Chinese wholesale supply, compare factories and trading companies, and find production-oriented offers. It is often the better starting point when the brief is specific, the order may scale, or the buyer wants to benchmark a product against a factory-oriented price.
For overseas buyers, however, a listing is not the same thing as an export-ready supplier relationship. Many listings are designed around domestic-market payment, language, delivery and support. The displayed price can also vary by material, quantity, configuration, packaging, production schedule or stock status.
A 1688 agent earns its place by doing the work a screenshot cannot do: confirming the seller’s role, checking whether the quoted item matches the required specification, clarifying MOQ and lead time, arranging samples, keeping records of approvals and putting quality and logistics into the plan.
Use 1688 with an agent when: you want deeper wholesale discovery, factory comparisons, a production quote or a private-label starting point.
Do not assume: the lowest displayed unit price represents the landed cost, the final quality level or a supplier’s willingness to support your market’s documentation and packaging needs.
3. Taobao agents: useful for research and samples, not automatically for scale
Taobao belongs to Alibaba’s China commerce retail ecosystem. Its strength for a sourcing team is speed of discovery: it can reveal retail-ready designs, niche accessories, sample-sized purchases and product-positioning clues. This makes it useful for validating an idea, testing a variant, creating an internal benchmark or locating a short-run item.
It is not automatically the best route for a long-term wholesale programme. A Taobao seller may be a retailer, a reseller, a workshop or a brand storefront; the listing itself does not answer whether the source can repeat the item at your volume, hold a specification, provide required documents or support consistent replenishment.
Use Taobao with an agent when: you need a retail sample, visual research or a small test order before you commit to supplier development.
Move beyond Taobao when: your product needs custom packaging, stable production, a negotiated MOQ, quality criteria or recurring international shipments.
4. Pinduoduo agents: value signals and consumer-market research
Pinduoduo was built around a consumer-oriented team-purchase model, according to PDD Holdings’ public filings. That gives the platform a distinct role in research: it can surface highly price-sensitive offers, value-market positioning and consumer-led product signals across many categories.
For an international B2B buyer, that does not turn Pinduoduo into a complete procurement system. A consumer-market offer can be useful as a reference point, but it may not reveal the factory, production consistency, packaging options, export readiness or ability to maintain a B2B order programme.
Use Pinduoduo with an agent when: you are researching value positioning, comparing retail price points or acquiring a small reference sample.
Do not use it as the sole decision tool when: your business depends on brand protection, repeatability, quality assurance or dependable global delivery.
The cost comparison buyers should actually make
Product price matters. But the total cost of a sourcing route is wider than a product listing:
Compare the full order cost—not just the unit quote
- Product specification, variants, packaging and MOQ.
- Samples, modifications and approval time.
- Supplier reliability, payment pathway and communication time.
- Inspection scope, defect handling and rework risk.
- Domestic collection, warehousing, consolidation and export freight.
- Destination-market labels, safety, customs and compliance responsibilities.
A cheaper item can become expensive if it arrives late, does not match the approved sample, cannot be consolidated with the rest of the order, or requires a last-minute replacement. Conversely, a slightly higher supplier quote can be commercially stronger when it produces a more reliable, export-ready order.
A practical route-selection checklist
Ask these five questions before choosing a platform or agent:
- Is this research, a sample or a production order? Retail platforms are often useful for research; wholesale or market sources matter more once the order must repeat.
- Will the order involve one supplier or many? More suppliers usually increases the value of local coordination and consolidation.
- What must be controlled? If material, colour, packaging, testing, labels or fulfilment rules matter, write them into the sourcing brief before comparing prices.
- What does the supplier actually do? Confirm whether it is a factory, trading company, retailer or reseller—and assess it against the programme you need.
- Who owns the export execution? Decide in advance who will inspect, receive goods, reconcile quantities, pack the shipment and manage documentation.
ROYAL UNION’s view: use platforms for discovery, build control around execution
There is no single “best” China sourcing channel. Yiwu, 1688, Taobao and Pinduoduo are valuable precisely because they give buyers different types of access to China’s product ecosystem.
The disciplined approach is to treat them as inputs to a controlled buying process. ROYAL UNION helps international buyers compare sources, make supplier and product decisions with clearer evidence, and bring approved orders through quality checks, consolidation and global delivery coordination. The objective is not simply to find a lower price; it is to create an order you can manage with confidence.
